Gyotaku – Japanese Fish Prints
Gyotaku began in the mid-1800s as a convenient way for Japanese fishermen to tally their day’s catch. A fisherman would quickly brush one side of a fish with black ink and stamp it on a sheet of rice paper. It wasn’t long before someone noticed the elegance of the prints! Versions with gentle overpainting of eyes and fins emerged as a respected and admired art form.
We will print our fish using both real (smelly!) and rubber ones using printer’s ink on rice paper. We will embellish our “trophy” with watercolor, acrylic, or colored pencil. Grab your fishing pole and Gyotaku with us!
Amy Morgan
Amy Morgan is an artist and teacher, who has determinedly created and shared her love of art since childhood. She grew up in the Midwest earning a B.A. from Carleton College and MFA from SDSU.
Her interest in ceramics led to many happy and challenging years teaching clay at the high school and college levels. In addition, she implemented an Art in the Classroom program at her daughters’ elementary school in Clovis and taught older special needs students in Fresno through the Fresno Arts Council’s Teaching Artist program. Currently, Amy teaches after-school STEAM enrichment classes to secondary school students in outlying communities.
Throughout, Amy has potted, sculpted, and painted for regional exhibits, participating in Sierra Art Trails, local art associations’ sales, presented workshops, and shown in dozens of Fresno Art Hops!
In 2019, she was awarded the Fresno Arts Council’s Horizon Award in the Arts. Amy was recently honored to have giant versions of her cheery animal portraits permanently displayed along Highway 99 in Madera as part of Cal Trans’ Clean California project.
